Climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts around Bwindi and Mgahinga
To enhance local communities around BMCA to adapt and mitigate climate change, BMCT has established a tree planting culture among these communities in addition to promoting energy saving stoves aiming at reducing the amount of wood energy being used.
In a bid to increase tree planting around Bwindi and Mgahinga, BMCT established a nursery bed at Kiyora where tree seedlings are being raised and then distributed to communities in the BMCA at no cost to encourage forestry and Agroforestry. Tree species such as Calliandra, Grevillea, Pine, Maesopsis, Sesbania and fruit trees are being raised and distributed to farmers around BMCA basing on their needs. These tree seedlings especially calliandra are being distributed to farmers under the sustainable land management program which is aimed at rehabilitating and conserving soil fertility in the areas on steep slopes where the effects of climate change are severe especially due to soil erosion.
